Risk is about what might happen: the range of outcomes an investment could have, good and bad. A loss is what already did. Probability is the part of the future people try to put numbers on; uncertainty is the part nobody can. A share that swings a lot is risky whether or not it has cost you anything yet, and a steady-looking one can carry a risk that simply hasn't shown up.
Mixing the words up leads to two mistakes: treating a paper loss as if it were final, and treating a calm price as if it were safe. This theme separates the different ways of losing — swings, deep falls, market moves, permanent loss, currency, inflation, bad timing, company failure and not being able to sell — and says which of them the app can show you. Most it can't measure directly, so knowing which is which matters more than any single number.
A holding can carry a lot of one while showing none of the other.
