IN PLAIN ENGLISH
Stat block separating banked gains from paper gains and expressing the portfolio's growth rate.
WHY IT HELPS
Distinguishes profit you have actually realised from profit that still depends on the market holding up.
HOW IT'S CALCULATED
Realised Gains = sale proceeds − cost basis of sold shares, less any still-held position priced at zero (written off). Unrealised Gains = (Total Value − Total Cost) plus those write-offs added back, so the two never double-count. CAGR = (end value ÷ total buy cost)^(1 ÷ years held) − 1, measured from your earliest buy date at 365.25 days per year. Avg Monthly Growth = (realised + unrealised) ÷ months held. All four exclude dividends.
